Medical ship 47
White hulls and the red cross mark the large allied medical ships during WWII. The ships job was to carry a very large number of wounded or sick solders to places of higher medical care for the more serious patents. The ship would then take the solders from the field of battle to a base hospital farther away fro the dangers of battle.
Normally the ships would be clearly marked as a non-hostile ship to the enemy axis fighters because of the big red cross on the side of the ship and because they carried no arms. But in one instance a japanese kamikaze plane hit a medical ship and the incident killed 28 people and wounded 48 others.
During WWII the U.S military had 24 hospital ships and every ship was manned by almost completely civilian crew. The army and the navy both had command of their own fleet of medical ships.Fifteen U.S. Navy Hospital Ships saw duty in World War II, all converted liners, freighters and transports, except for one: USS Relief (AH-1). U.S.
